Gary I. Shafer Obituary

Gary I. Shafer, 74, of Rochester, New York, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Gary was married to the love of his life, Judy, on May 22, 1993. For 32 beautiful years, they built a life together grounded in love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Their marriage was a true partnership, and Judy remained his heart, his greatest joy, and his constant companion through every season of life. Together they shared one son, Benjamin, who was a source of immense pride. Gary cherished his role as a father and also loved being “Papa” to his beloved great nephew, Liam, affectionately known as “buddy boy.” Time spent with Ben and Liam brought him endless smiles and treasured memories.

Gary was known for his easy-going nature – a true “go with the flow” kind of guy who took life as it came with a smile and calm heart. He had a deep love for the Green Bay Packers and rarely, if ever, missed cheering them on!. He enjoyed cooking for family, spending time with their beloved dogs, traveling to Disney World, and taking cruises with those he loved. Throughout their marriage, Judy and Gary saved and loved their greyhounds, Sugar, Olga, Zach, Ellie and plott hound, Toby, as well as numerous cats. If he could, Gary would have adopted every dog and cat that needed a home.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Judith; his beloved son, Benjamin (Kevin Milliard); sisters-in-law Kim (Marion Bulger) Begandy, Sandra (Terrance) Lewis, and Donna (Reginald) Aceto; his great nephew, Liam Trovato, and numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Gary’s honor on Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at Perkins Mansion, located at 494 East Ave, Rochester, NY 14607. Memorial gifts can be sent to Lifespan of Greater Rochester, Inc.1900 South Clinton Avenue, Rochester NY 14618.
