It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John H. DeFrain who left us unexpectedly December 7, 2025, at the age of 64 in Rochester NY. John was born on September 22, 1961 and he was a devoted brother, uncle and a friend/confidant to many who knew him.
John was predeceased by his mother Patricia Oberdorf, father John DeFrain and oldest sibling Cheryl DeFrain. He is survived by his loving sister Kimberly DeFrain, brother in law Keith Taylor, caring oldest niece Crystal Taylor and great niece Mia Shriver. Additionly, the oldest remaining sister Debbie DeFrain, Tammy DeFrain, youngest sister Sylvia Oberdorf and two nieces Harley Defrain and Amanda Tydings. Close Friends and colleagues with some to mention: Tom Howell, Celeste Rock, Jimmy Sanger, Ashley Prindle, Markos Skrombolas and Jesse Adams and many more.
As a young boy, John attended St. Augustine and served as an altar boy for many years. His familiarity with biblical language often surpassed his own understanding as he grew older. He later earned his GED and worked for Monroe County as a data processor for a time. Largely self-taught, John went on to master the trades of carpentry, contracting, and construction in many areas. Throughout his life, he devoted much of his time to work, always preferring to stay busy. He was constantly involved in projects—often several properties at once—throughout Rochester, New York.
John picked up many nicknames throughout the years. He was known to many as J.D. and Mullet, and to his brother-in-law as Junior and Bonehead. His charismatic character was well known throughout the community.
John helped and befriended many people. He truly cared for his people, and to the best of his ability, he showed that care through acts of kindness, generosity, support, and physical protection. He had a great sense of humor and was always doing goofy things to make someone laugh—shouting“Yup, yup” as he rode his bike through the city.
John’s passions included collecting pennies and pocket knives, scratching lottery tickets, cracking jokes, snoozing his alarms ten times (mind you, he sometimes had two phones), spending time with his great-niece Mia, and especially enjoying the meals his younger sister Kim lovingly prepared and cooked for him.
Although John, like many of us, endured many trials and tribulations, his love for his family never wavered. His light always surfaced and shined over whatever tried to hold him down. He always showed up. He always picked up the phone—even if you had to call him twenty times. He truly tried. He was there for every move, every holiday, and most pivotal family events.
John was such an impactful human being that I know he has already made one heck of a presence in heaven. John’s life will not be in vain. He will always be remembered, and whether his purpose feels fully fulfilled or not, there is rejoicing—because heaven gained a good soldier. Strong, stern, mighty, caring, dependable and willing.
He will be greatly missed and is forever in our hearts.
Never forget John for he always said:
"The 5 P’s: Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance."
From here on, if you see a penny, know he’s probably near.
