Lawrence passed away on January 11, 2025 at age 86. He was the first of 4 boys born to parents Walter and Margaret Martling. Walter received an American Institute of Architecture degree from the University of Illinois. His mother Margaret (Leadbeater) had a Master’s Degree in Botany from University of Chicago. They settled together in a house in Oak Park, IL because of the exceptional school system.
Lawrence graduated from Oak Park & River Forest High School. During his time in school, he played 1st violin in the school’s orchestra using his grandfather’s violin. He went on to attend the University of Illinois and earned a degree in engineering. Following graduation from college, he became a commissioned officer in the US Air Force.
Lawrence moved to Rochester, NY to begin his career with Eastman Kodak Co., the employer he would eventually retire from many years later. In retirement, he became a major supporter of Eastman School of Music and an adamant automobile enthusiast. He also enjoyed camping in his RV, rooting for the Chicago Cubs and listening to classical music.
Lawrence is survived by his two adopted sons, Leo and Tim; his brothers Allan (Nancy) Martling of Michigan and Jim (Sue) Martling of California and their families.
A small family gathering to celebrate Lawrence’s life will be held locally. A reunion of the larger family is planned for the summer.
