Scott Bryan Metcalfe Obituary

SCOTT BRYAN METCALFE of Rochester, New York, died on the fifth of June, 2025, aged 58 surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Jane (née McDowell); father to Tanner, Quinn, and Keegan; son of Bryan and June; brother of Kelly and Jason.

Scott was born in Toronto, Canada on January 6, 1967. He played youth hockey in the Greater Toronto Hockey League and began his professional hockey career in the Ontario Hockey League with the Kingston Canadiens and Windsor Spitfires. He also represented Team Canada at the 1987 World Junior Championships and was a participant in the famous “Punch Out in Piestany” brawl with Team Russia. Scott was a first-round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft before being traded to the Buffalo Sabres. Scott played the majority of his 14-year professional career with the Rochester Americans, becoming a fan favorite for his tenacious, hard-working, and tough style of play. He was the recipient of the Rochester Americans most-popular player award multiple times over the course of his career and won the Calder Cup with the team in 1996, being inducted to the Rochester Americans Hall of Fame in 2006 after becoming the team’s all-time leader in penalty minutes, and top-10 in games played, goals, and assists. He also played games for Eisbaren Berlin and Hannover Scorpions of the German league, the Sheffield Steelers of the British league, and represented the Rochester team in the 1996 Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland.

Scott met his wife Jane while attending North Park High School in Brampton, Ontario in grade 12. They were married in 1992 and had three children- Tanner, now 26, Quinn, now 25, and Keegan, now 21. A loyal fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Buffalo Bills, Scott also enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and attempting golf. Scott was a pillar of the Rochester hockey community beyond his retirement, coaching his children and over 500 youth players over his lifetime in the Monroe County Youth Hockey, Rochester Monarchs, Roc City Elite, and Churchville-Chili High School organizations. Scott was a very generous person, always the first to volunteer for a good cause, winning the McCulloch Trophy for community service three times over his career and playing in many charity hockey games until his joints would no longer allow it. The Metcalfe family thanks everyone in the community for their kind words and well-wishes. Scott will be missed, but we are at peace knowing he is with the Lord and watching over us all.
