William Balsley Obituary

William Douglas Balsley, 84, of Rochester, New York, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2024. He was born on October 5, 1939, in Waterloo, NY. Bill was a loving, generous, and caring guy who was known for his hard work and pride in his military career. Once a Marine, Always a Marine was his motto. In 2022, he was honored to attend the Honor Flight with his son David and fellow veterans to Washington, D.C. The vets were honored annd taken to all of the monuments and memorials including the changing of the guard in Arlington Cemetery.

He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, uncle, and friend. Bill had a passion for Motown Music. His favorite group was The Platters and favorite song, The Great Pretender. He was a dedicated fan of the Cleveland Browns football team for over 70 years passing this dedication down to his son Scott and grandson Connor. He loved sports in general and enjoyed traveling, camping, and going to the theater, movies, concerts, and musicals.

Bill is survived by his loving wite of 57 years, Carol, and his sons David and Scott, daughter-law Valerie, Grandchildren: Connor, Sadie, and Rylan. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Linda Meister, brother-in-law, Fred Meister, nephews Brian Meister (Iliana), Dan Lerkins (Mary), Dale Lerkins (Sue), Bill Lerkins (Sue), Harry Brown II (Jennifer), and Andy Brown (Cindy), as well as nieces Jennifer Whitaker (Bob), Joy Franck (Doug), Elizabeth Bullard (Kevin), Karen Freeman, and Judy Davis (Eric). He also leaves behind 17 great nieces and nephews and 16 great, great nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his sisters Barbra Lerkins and Joan Brown.

Bill attended primary school in Waterloo, New York, and graduated from Waterloo High School in 1958.

He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1958 until 1962. After his military service, Bill worked as a Quality Control Specialist in the Aerial Film Department at Eastman Kodak Company until retirement. After retirement, he worked at Pep Boys, and as a quality control specialist at a lawn mower blade company.

Bill worshipped at Gates Presbyterian Church with his family. He was an avid golfer playing in a Kodak Golf League for many years as well as many church golf tournaments. He was a dedicated Boy Scout Committee Member for Troop 452 until both of his sons obtained the rank of Eagle Scout.

Military Honors will be performed at 11 AM on Friday, February 16 in the All-Seasons Chapel at White Haven Memorial Park, 210 Marsh Rd., Pittsford, NY 14534. Memorial Service celebrating Bill's life will be held Saturday, February 17 at 2 PM, at Gates Presbyterian Church, 1049 Wegman Rd., Rochester, NY 14624.  Consider a contribution to Gates Presbyterian Church or Paralyzed Veterans of America, causes close to his heart.
